Akli and Hamner Lead Gamecocks on Day 1 of Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Gamecocks wrapped up the first day of play at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic with junior No. 29 Ayana Akli and freshman Sarah Hamner highlighting the day with straight sets singles wins. South Carolina completed two rounds of doubles play and the first round of singles play.
 
The tournament is broken up into flights, with each flight containing eight individual players or eight doubles teams. The Gamecocks competed in nine out of the 12 singles flights and five out of the six doubles flights.
 
Gamecock Notables

• The only Gamecock to face a ranked singles opponent, No. 29 Ayana Akli posted a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win over No. 52 Anna Campana of Wake Forest.
• Sarah Hamner, the No. 1 ITA Newcomer, defeated North Carolina’s Alle Sanford 6-2, 7-6 (2).
• In doubles, No. 40 Megan Davies and Allie Gretkowski downed closely ranked No. 41 Emmanouela Antonaki and Tamara Racine of Mississippi State 6-3.
• Ana Cruz and Misa Malkin wasted no time in their 6-1 win over Anika Yarlagadda and Sara McClure of North Carolina.
