Horvit, Davies Ready for NCAA Championships

Singles Championship Begins Sunday, Doubles on Monday

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Mia Horvit and Megan Davies from the 24th-ranked South Carolina women’s tennis team begin play in the NCAA Singles Championship on Sunday and Doubles Championship on Monday. The USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., is the host site for this year’s tournaments.

Horvit is scheduled to play No. 102 Paola Delgado from VCU in the first round of the 64-person singles event at 11:30 a.m., while Davies faces No. 84 Ilze Hattingh from Arizona State at 3 p.m. Davies and Horvit take on No. 9 Chloe Beck and Karolina Berankova of Duke in the first round of doubles, which features 32 teams.

Horvit is making her second appearance in both events, as her first singles championship bid came as a freshman in 2017 and doubles as a junior in 2019. She reached the round of 16 in singles to earn All-America honors in 2017 and made the semifinals of the doubles with Ingrid Martins to earn All-America honors that year as well. Horvit is one of only three players in school history to earn All-America citations in both singles and doubles during her career.

Davies is set to make her first appearance in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.

Horvit, named to the All-SEC First Team this season, is currently ranked No. 30 nationally in singles and combined with Davies forms the nation’s No. 14-rated doubles team. She played the No. 1 singles position the entire season and put together an 11-10 record overall while going 9-8 on court one and 6-3 in SEC matches. Horvit scored three wins against ranked opponents, two of which came versus players ranked in the top 20 at the time of the match. The Palm City, Fla., native stands three singles wins shy of reaching 100 for her career, a feat accomplished by only three other Gamecocks in the program’s history.

Davies made the All-SEC Second Team and is rated as the No. 59 player in the country in the latest ITA rankings. The Wolverhampton, England, native secured the No. 2 singles position throughout the season and went 13-8 overall in singles play. Davies posted an 11-5 record in dual matches and had a 6-3 mark in SEC competitions. She took home SEC Player of the Week honors once after helping South Carolina earn two upsets on the road at Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Davies had three wins over ranked players during the spring who were all rated in the top 50 in the nation when the match took place.

In doubles, Davies and Horvit played the No. 1 position in almost every match this spring and went 14-10 together overall. They were 10-8 at No. 1 doubles and 6-5 in SEC matches. They have been ranked as high as No. 13, and they own seven victories against ranked opponents on the year. Individually, Horvit compiled a 16-10 record in doubles to lead the Gamecocks.
