Essayi Secures SEC Male Runner of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Feb. 14, 2023) – South Carolina’s star distance runner, Anass Essayi, has earned SEC Male Runner of the Week. The award was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

This is the second SEC Weekly honor for the Morocco native, having earned SEC Male Runner of the Week during the 2022 outdoor season. Essayi earned the award after turning in the second-fastest mile in collegiate history at the David Hemery Valentine Invite on Saturday afternoon. The Morocco native registered a time of 3:50.46, besting his previous school record by just under seven seconds. In addition to shattering his own program record, Essayi recorded the fastest mile in the NCAA this season by 1.44 seconds and the second-fastest mile in the world this season.

Essayi and the rest of the Gamecocks will close out the indoor regular season this Friday when South Carolina hosts the 2023 USC Indoor Open on Friday afternoon.
