Carolina Begins SEC Championships

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina track and field team began its indoor post season at the 2021 SEC Championships on Thursday in Fayetteville. Elisha Brooks and Benjamin Womble got the day started for the Gamecocks while the men’s DMR highlighted the day with their performance.

After four events Elisha Brooks sits in 11th overall and about 200 points behind a scoring position with three events to still be contested on Friday. Senior Benjamin Womble sits in 14th with the duo combining for four personal records throughout the first day of competition. Both Brooks and Womble posted PRs in the 60m while Brooks added a personal record in the long jump and Womble added a small best in the high jump.

Although the men’s DMR was unable to capture team points for the Gamecocks, the did post the second-fastest time in school history at 9:54.99. The combination of Blake Newcomb, Rivaldo Leacock, Hayden Cobbe and Sean Petersen combined for just the fourth time in program history a DMR squad clocked under 10 minutes in the event.

“Well we had a pretty good run with the men’s DMR today,” South Carolina head coach Curtis Frye said. “It was the second-best time in school history. We know they didn’t get any points but they ran well. That gives us some hope for the future in that event with all of those kids coming back next year and into the outdoor season.”

The final contested event during the first of three days in Fayetteville was the men’s and women’s weight throw. In a loaded field of weight throw Malik Paul finished 10th with a toss of 20.16m (66-0 1/2) while KD Young wrapped up her indoor season with an 18.19m (59-8 1/4) to finish fourth in her flight but did miss the final.

Carolina returns to Randal Tyson Track Center on Friday morning to continue the heptathlon and begin many events that require qualifying for Saturday’s finals. Womble and Brooks will be the ones to kick it off for South Carolina at 11:00 a.m. ET in the heptathlon 60m hurdles.

“We’re healthy and we’re ready to go,” Frye added. “We still have a practice tonight with the rest of our team that didn’t compete today. Everyone is upbeat and has spirits high. Now it’s time to go get in the midst of this thing tomorrow. We tell our team that as long as you have a lane, you have a chance.”
