Gamecocks Wrap Up 2021 SEC Indoor Championships

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina track and field wrapped up its time at the 2021 SEC Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, seeing nine events earn points between the men’s and women’s teams with Evan Miller’s fourth-place finish highlighting Saturday’s competition.

“It really was a great weekend, we would of liked to finish high but the efforts were there from our entire team,” South Carolina head coach Curtis Frye said. “It was a totally different atmosphere after we competed at home for almost the entire indoor season. It was a great year, to get through the struggles that went along with COVID and go through the pandemic with a team of 100 student-athletes was a challenge. The SEC stepped up and managed this so well. My staff, I’m so happy with them, getting our kids through this and performing at a high level.”

Saturday’s action got started with sophomore Filip Demsar in the 60m hurdles final. In his first final’s appearance the Slovenian earned a pair of points for the Gamecocks with a seventh-place finish in a time of 7.86.

In the men’s 800m it was Blake Newcomb, a walk-on junior, who found himself among the lead pack during his first SEC final. Newcomb nearly matched his personal record he set on Friday in the prelims but settled for a 1:50.89 to finish in sixth overall and three points for Carolina.

Evan Miller was South Carolina’s final men’s individual on Saturday, competing in the 200m. After posting a lifetime best on Friday Miller matched his previous personal best of 20.93 to help him finish fourth overall after a disqualification. Miller’s fourth-place finish is the highest for Carolina in the 200m since Ncincilili Titi in 2018.

The men’s competition concluded with the 4x400m relay with the Gamecocks’ team of Bailey Rogers, EJ Richardson, Jackson Junkins and William Spencer Jr., running an eighth-place time of 3:08.96 in the first of three heats of the final.

The Carolina women got underway with the women’s shot put later in the day. It was KD Young and Alycia Springs who both qualified for the final in the event with Young eventually earning points for the Gamecocks with her seventh-place toss of 15.73m (51-7 1/4). Springs settled for ninth with her toss of 15.61m (51-2 3/4).

The women’s 4x400m relay capped off the three-day championship meet with an outstanding showing, improving their season-best time by three full seconds to earn themselves a fifth-place finish. The combination of Knowledge Omovoh, Rachel Glenn, Ashton Lindley and Stephanie Davis was highlighted by Davis’ 51.5 anchor leg split.

Next the Gamecocks will wait until Wednesday, March 3, to see what declarations will be made in the NCAA. The Gamecocks have a number of student-athletes that are among the 12-20 range in regards to rankings in those individual events. For more information on the Gamecocks this season continue to check back with GamecocksOnline.com.
