Chelangat Claims SEC Women’s Freshman of the Week
COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 21, 2023) – South Carolina freshman runner Sylvia Chelangat earned her first SEC hardware following her outdoor debut in the Bahamas. The Kenya native was awarded the SEC Women’s Freshmen of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Chelangat earned a pair of golds and aided the Gamecocks in picking up 20 combined points between the two events at the Island Relays Bahamas. Chelangat ran the second fastest outdoor 800m in Gamecock history (2:05.99) and currently ranks first in the East Region and first in the NCAA. Later in the day, she was part of the 4x800m relay squad that ran the fifth fastest 4x800m relay in program history with a winning time of 8:56.91.
Chelangat will look to continue her strong start to the outdoor season when she and the Gamecocks play host to the Weems Baskin Relays this weekend at the Sheila and Morris Cregger Track. The meet will begin on Friday, March 24 and conclude on Saturday, March 25.
