Baseball Visits Rock Hill for Wednesday Matchup at Winthrop

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of South Carolina baseball team starts a string of seven road games in its next eight contests on Wednesday night (May 3) as the Gamecocks visit Rock Hill for a midweek game against Winthrop. First pitch is at 6 p.m. at the Winthrop Ballpark.

Wednesday’s game will be streamed on ESPN+.  All games also will be broadcast on the Gamecocks Sports Network from Learfield with Derek Scott and Tommy Moody on the call.

The Gamecocks lost the three-game series to Auburn this past weekend, but won the Sunday game, 8-7, as Will Tippett’s three-run home run in the seventh inning gave the Gamecocks the lead for good.

SCOUTING WINTHROP
The Eagles did not play last weekend and are coming off a 5-2 win over Charlotte last Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday’s starter Alex Logusch struck out nine in 6.1 innings of work. McKinley Erves has a .327 batting average for the Eagles while Brody Hopkins has five home runs and 25 RBI. Logusch has 52 strikeouts in 42.2 innings pitched.

SERIES VS. WINTHROP
Carolina holds a 24-7series advantage on Winthrop heading into Wednesday’s game. The Gamecocks defeated the Eagles, 19-3, on Feb. 22 as Ethan Petry homered twice and drove in four and Cole Messina was 3-for-5 with four RBi in the win.

PROBABLE PITCHING ROTATION
Wednesday
South Carolina Eli Jones (So. RHP) 4-2, 3.06 ERA, 35.1 IP, 9 BB, 40 SO
Winthrop Alex Logusch (R-So. RHP) 1-2, 6.33 ERA, 42.2 IP, 32 BB, 52 SO

TIPPETT GOES YARD IN AUBURN WIN
Freshman Will Tippett belted a three-run home run to left field to give Carolina an 8-6 lead on its way to an 8-7 win over Auburn on Sunday afternoon (April 30). It was Tippett’s first career home run and the Stone Mountain, Ga., native now has seven RBI on the year.

PETRY MOVES INTO THE RECORD BOOKS
Freshman Ethan Petry now has the freshman record for home runs (20) and RBI (65) after his two-run double on April 22 broke Justin Smoak’s freshman RBI record, set in 2006. Petry now is three home runs away from breaking the SEC freshman mark set by Vanderbilt’s Pedro Alvarez.

GAMECOCKS GET ON BASE
Not only are the Gamecocks third in the country in home runs, Carolina has been on base 370 times via the free pass (280 walks, 90 hit by pitches). That leads to a .430 team on-base percentage. Carson Hornung leads Carolina with 347 walks. Talmadge LeCroy has been hit 13 times. Carolina is fifth in the nation in walks and eighth in the country in hit by pitches. The Gamecocks also broke their single-season hit by pitch record in the April 30 game against Auburn. The previous record was 89, set in the 2010 season.

UP NEXT
Carolina continues its road trip this weekend as the Gamecocks face Kentucky in a three-game series, starting Friday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m. Sunday’s game is on SEC Network with Tom Hart and Kyle Peterson on the call.
