South Carolina Heads to Jacksonville for NCAA East Regionals
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 23, 2023) – South Carolina Track & Field is heading down south to Jacksonville, Fla. for the NCAA East Regional. The meet will be held at Visit Jax Track at Hodges Stadium, hosted by the University of North Florida. The event will begin on Wednesday, May 24 and conclude on Saturday, May 27.

Meet Information
The NCAA East Regional consists of the top 48 marks in individual events, top 24 relay teams in the region and the top 24 multi-event athletes. Each individual track event, excluding distance, will conclude of a first round (Top 48), followed by the quarterfinals (best 24 after opening round). Once the quarterfinals have taken place, the top 12 (top three in each heat plus next three fastest times) will secure their spots in the 2023 NCAA Championship in Austin, Texas on June 7-10. Field events operate differently, with throws, long jump and triple jump each getting three attempts, while high jump and pole vault will keep competing until there are only 12 remaining athletes.
The relay events and distance events will each run one race with the top 12 advancing to the national championship next month.
The men will compete on Wednesday and Friday, while the women will compete on Thursday and Saturday. For a full schedule of the NCAA East Regional, click here.

“The season is far from over. Everything that we have been working on since the end of the indoor season has led up to this very meet. Not everyone is able to compete in a regional event, and it takes a lot of hard work and patience to get to this weekend. So, to be able to come here and represent this great university, there is a lot of pride that comes with that. I have challenged our team and I expect their very best as we look to take it one step further at the National Championship in Austin. As always, we are excited and we look forward to seeing how our student-athletes respond to the competition this weekend.”
Gamecocks in Jacksonville
The Gamecocks qualified for 19 total events, with 11 events coming on the men’s side and eight events qualified for on the women’s side.
A trio of Gamecock men qualified for a pair of events, while two of those three are part of a third event as well. Anthony Greenhow and Evan Miller each qualified for individual sprints, with Greenhow earning a spot in the 100 and 200-meter races, while Miller will be entered into both the 200m and the 400m. Greenhow and Miller are also part of the 4x100m relay squad that jumped in as the 23rd-ranked relay team. Dylan Targgart joins the duo as a multi-event entry, qualifying for both the shot put and the discus.
Anass Essayi and Rogerio Amaral qualified for a pair of distance races. Essayi, the 2023 SEC Champion, will look to secure a spot in the 1500m championship in Austin, Texas next month. Amaral enters in at No. 38 in the qualifying for the 5000m. Filip Demsar rounds out the final event on the track, earning a spot in the 110-meter hurdles after ranking 17th in the region. Kobe Franklin (high jump) and Dillon McCarthy (pole vault) round out the male participants for the upcoming East Regional in Jacksonville.
The Gamecock women qualified for six events on the track, including both the 4x100m and the 4x400m relays. Jayla Jamison will make her regional appearance in the 200m, ranking 11th in the region. A trio of Gamecock women will be making their East Regional debuts: Sylvia Chelangat (800m), Silan Ayyildiz (1500m SEC Champion) and Elena Kelety (400mH). KD Young will round out the events on the women’s side, having qualified for both the shot put and the hammer throw.
