Tim Hall

Tim Hall was named the seventh head coach in Gamecock Track & Field history on Friday, June 23, 2023.

Hall’s squad saw a major jump in improvement from year one to year two, earning him USTFCCCA Southeast Regional Women’s Coach of the Year for the second consecutive outdoor season. In his second full season, Hall coached 21 All-SEC honorees and 26 All-Americans between the indoor and outdoor campaigns. The indoor season saw both the men and women finished inside the Top 10 at the SEC Indoor Championship for the first time since 2012. The indoor campaign was led by The Bowerman Semifinalist, JaMeesia Ford, who earned First Team All-SEC as well as First Team All-American nods. During the indoor campaign, Hall’s squad accounted for 50 new Top 10 program marks with six new program records, including his direct sprinters accounting for 15 new Top 10 identifiers.

The outdoor campaign is where the Gamecocks shined as the women’s team finished fifth at the SEC Championship and seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championship for the best team finish since 2006. Hall coached Ford to a 200m national championship during the outdoor season as well as earning the SEC Commissioner’s Trophy, awarded to the student-athlete who scores the most points at the SEC Outdoor Championship. Ford tallied four gold medals in Lexington, Ky., earning SEC Women’s Runner of the Year and USTFCCCA Southeast Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year. The women’s 4x100m and 4x400m relays swept the gold medal titles at the SEC Outdoor Championship in Hall’s second season. The second-year head coach was responsible for 15 All-Americans during the outdoor season, including eight from his sprints group. Hall also led the men’s team to a 23^rd place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championship, the best team finish for the men in the post-COVID era.

During Hall’s first season, the Gamecocks reached heights that haven’t been seen in quite some time with 95 new Top-10 program marks and 21 new program records. In his first season alone, Hall oversaw a grand total of 27 All-American honors and coached a pair of indoor national championship events in the 4x400m relay and the 200m. Hall was also responsible for coaching 19 All-SEC honorees throughout the indoor and outdoor season. Hall’s success in such a short period earned him the title of USTFCCCA Southeast Region Women’s Coach of the Year for the outdoor season.

One of the most notable athletes in Hall’s first year at Carolina was Ford who appeared on seven Bowerman Trophy Watch Lists. Ford was the anchor leg of the indoor 4x400m relay that won the sixth national title in program history, as well as becoming just the third Gamecock ever to win the indoor 200m national championship. Ford earned a total of five First Team All-American honors in her first season with Hall at the helm of the program. In addition, Ford swept the SEC Women’s Freshman Runner of the Year honors for both indoor and outdoor and was also named USTFCCCA Southeast Region Track Athlete of the Year under Hall’s tutelage.

Hall’s sprinters alone in his first year at Carolina accounted for seven of the 21 new program records, including setting both the 4x400m relay indoor and outdoor records this season. His first SEC Indoor Championship as a head coach saw the Gamecock men finish 4^th overall, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since 2010. Meanwhile, the women finished 12^th overall on the national stage during the indoor season and 15^th overall during the outdoor season.

Hall arrived in Columbia after serving a five-year stint as the Associate Head Coach at Kentucky, working alongside Director of Track & Field, Lonnie Greene. Hall coached the Kentucky sprinters and has been named the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year for five consecutive years running (2019-2023).

In his final season with Kentucky, Hall coached Kentucky’s NCAA silver medal 4x100m relay squad, as well as outdoor NCAA scorers in the mile relay and Karimah Davis in the 200m. Hall’s expertise enabled Kentucky in finishing sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Championship with 28 points. Under his guidance, nine student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships, resulting in one medal and 17 All-American honors. At the SEC Championships in Baton Rouge, Hall’s coaching led to 13 athletes accounting for 28 points and four All-SEC honors. Additionally, Hall coached an athlete to a new program record in the 100m.

No stranger to the big stage, Hall has coached an Olympic Gold Medalist, five Olympians, a World Champion and silver medalist, a world record holder, two American record holders, four collegiate record holders, 13 NCAA Champions, 16 SEC Champions and over 150 All-Americans.

During his time at Kentucky, Hall also coached 2022 Bowerman Award Recipient Abby Steiner. Hall coached Steiner to the American record in the indoor 200m (22.09), collegiate record in the indoor 200m (four times), collegiate record in the 300m (35.80), earned two NCAA 200m titles, a 60m NCAA silver, three SEC titles in the 200m, two SEC silvers in the 200m, 100m SEC silver, the fifth fastest wind-legal 100m in collegiate history (10.92) and a 48.77 split on the collegiate record 4x400m relay team.

Hall also enjoyed coaching stints at Tennessee (2014-2018), Clemson (2008-2013) and Charlotte (1996-2008). Hall also coached two more Bowerman Award winners in Christian Coleman at Tennessee (2017) and Brianna Rollins at Clemson (2012). Hall worked his way up from Assistant Coach to Associate Head Coach at each of his coaching stops.

Hall is married to the former Adrean Byers and the couple have two children (TeAnna and Timothy, Jr.) and one granddaughter (Zanyla).
