Martins Concludes Wimbledon Run in Round of 16
London, England – South Carolina women’s tennis alum Ingrid Martins concluded her grass season on Monday in the Doubles Round of 16 at Wimbledon. The 2019 graduate earned a late entry to the draw and made the most of her opportunity with her trip to the Round of 16 being the furthest she’s ever advanced in a Grand Slam level event.
Martins, who played for the Gamecocks from 2015-19, has been steadily working her way up the WTA Rankings since her move to professional tennis. Upon her graduation in 2019, she ended the year with a WTA Doubles Ranking of 635 and has since worked her way up to No. 58 in the world prior to the start of The Championships.
Prior to her run at Wimbledon, Martins and partner Lidziya Marozava won the title at the WTA 250 in Bad Homburg, Germany, Martins first 250 level title win and first title on grass.
At The Championships, Martins and Marozava got off to a hot start in their first round match on Friday. The duo earned a win in straight sets, blanking their opponents 6-0 in the first set and coming back to take the second set 6-3 to advance in the draw.
In Sunday’s second round match, the duo came back with another straight set win, this time with a pair of 6-4 sets to be one of the final 16 pairs standing.
In third round action, Martins and Marozava dropped the first set 4-6, but battled back for an evenly matched second set that was forced to a tiebreaker. The breaker was also a close battle that Martins and her partner narrowly dropped in an 8-10 decision.
With her latest title and Slam run, Martins currently sits at No. 54 in the world in the live rankings and is predicted to hit a new career-high when the next official rankings are released on Monday following the conclusion of Wimbledon.
