Mills Wins Back Draw at Regional Championships
Chapel Hill, N.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis graduate Elise Mills conquered the A2 Consolation Draw at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships on Sunday. After dropping her first-round match in the main draw, Mills took down three opponents to claim the Consolation Draw title.
In Sunday’s action, Mills began in the semifinals against Furman’s Eleanor Schulson. It was a gritty battle with the Paladin taking the first set but Mills fighting back to claim the second. The final decision came down to a ten-point tiebreaker with the Gamecock coming out on top 10-7 to advance.
In the title match, Mills faced Furman’s Maeve Thornton in a match that played out in a similar fashion to her semifinal match. The two opponents split sets but it was Mills who came out on top of the deciding tiebreaker 10-6.
The Prosperity, S.C., native now improves to 6-5 on the year in singles with three of her six victories coming in straight sets.
Mill’s back draw win marks the conclusion of the Regional Championships for the Gamecocks. The team will return to Columbia in preparation for next weekend’s Gamecock Shootout.
The Gamecock Shootout will run Oct., 27-29 at the Carolina Tennis Center in Columbia. More details will be released at a later time.
