Pair of Gamecocks Inducted into Penn Relays Wall of Fame
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Dec. 15, 2023) – South Carolina Track & Field legends Shalonda Solomon and Terrence Trammell became the second and third Gamecock individuals in program history to be inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame, joining Dawn Ellerbe who was inducted in 2012. The Carolina graduates were announced in the Wall of Fame Class of 2024 this afternoon by the committee.
Solomon captured a trio of NCAA Championships during her career, including sweeping the 200 meter dash in 2006 as she claimed both the indoor and outdoor crowns. Solomon secured 11 All-American honors during her time donning the Garnet & Black, while also claiming five SEC titles in three years.
Solomon won seven watches during her Penn Relays career. At Long Beach Poly she ran lead-off on the championship 4×100 in 2003, and anchored the 4×400 team to wins in 2003 and 2004. Her anchor split of 51.6 in 2003 was a Relays record, which helped her earn honors as the meet’s outstanding female high school relay athlete. While in college at Carolina she anchored the Championship of America winning 4×100 in 2005 and 2007 and won watches anchoring the 2005 4×200 and running 2nd leg on the 2007 4×400 relay team.
Solomon holds both 200m program records for the Gamecocks, clocking 22.57 for the indoor record and 22.36 for the outdoor mark.
Trammell had a standout career for the Gamecocks, winning a men’s program record six national championships. During his indoor career, Trammell claimed three titles, including winning back-to-back national championships in the 60-meter hurdles in 1999 and 2000. He backed that up in the outdoor season, winning the national championship in the 110-meter hurdle in both 1999 and 2000. Trammell laid claim to a program record 13 total All-American honors during his three-year stint with the Garnet & Black and won eight SEC championships.
The standout sprinter competed in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games for USA, competing in the 110m hurdles. Trammell earned silver medalist honors in both 2000 and 2004 and also captured three silver medals at the World Championships. Trammell also earned four medals at the World Indoor Championships, including a pair of golds in the 60mH in Lisbon (2001) and Moscow (2006).
While competing at the Penn Relays, Trammell claimed back-to-back Championship of America wins in 1999 and 2000 in the 110m hurdles. Additionally, Trammell set a Penn Relays record of 13.30 in 2000 on his way to the title, a record that has stood for 24 years and is the longest standing men’s hurdles Carnival record.
Trammell’s name is found atop the all-time Gamecock record in eight different events: the indoor 55m (6.12), indoor 60m (6.54), indoor 55mH (6.94), indoor 60mH (7.52), outdoor 100m (10.04), outdoor 110mH (13.19) and a pair of outdoor relays in the 4x100m (38.45) and the sprint medley relay (3:13.00).
Trammell was inducted into the Gamecock Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.
