Carolina Women Open the Season at No. 9
TEMPE, Ariz. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team earned its highest preseason ranking in program history, coming in at No. 9 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Women’s Rankings as announced on Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Gamecocks’ previous high was No. 11, accomplished during the 1995-96 season. South Carolina’s historic ranking comes after ending the 2018-19 season at No. 5 and bringing in the No. 1-ranked recruiting class.
Overall, six of Carolina’s opponents appear in the first rankings of the season with five of them being SEC foes. Those programs include: Georgia (T2), N.C. State (8), Vanderbilt (10), Texas A&M (17), Florida (21) and Tennessee (22).
Currently, the Gamecocks’ lineup features two ranked singles players and a doubles team from the end-of-fall rankings with No. 27 Mia Horvit, No. 28 Megan Davies and the No. 18 pair of Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton.
South Carolina begins the spring season next weekend when they visit N.C. State on Saturday, Jan. 18.
