Track & Field Concludes Final Day of Razorback Invitational
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Jan. 27, 2024) – South Carolina Track & Field concluded the high-profile Razorback Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Randal Tyson Track Complex in Fayetteville, Ark.
One of the most notable performances was put on by the women’s 4x400m relay squad of Zaya Akins, Jahnile Registre, Jayla Jamison and JaMeesia Ford. The quartet of runners finished runner-up with a program record time of 3:27.09 for the second fastest 4x400m time in the NCAA this season. South Carolina’s time of 3:27.09 bested the previous program record of 3:28.25 set in 2003 by Tiffany Ross, Miki Barber, Demetria Washington and Lashinda Demus.
Sticking with the women’s side, fellow Kenya freshmen Judy Kosgei and Teresa Cherotich etched their names into the record books as well. Kosgei finished eighth in the mile with a time of 4:38.64 for the second fastest indoor mile in Gamecock history. Cherotich, making her collegiate debut, ran 9:24.73 in the 3,000 meter to finish 10th. Cherotich’s time in her 3K debut also ranks second in Gamecock history.
Dylan Targgart and Theo Mudzengerere led the way for the Gamecock men on Saturday. Targgart entered the day with a personal best throw of 19.26m in the shot put. The Michigan native finished third in the shot put after throwing a new personal best 19.76m (64-10) to rank third in the NCAA and third in South Carolina history. Mudzengerere also took home third overall in his event, jumping 15.81m (51-10.5) in the triple jump.
Rogerio Amaral and Bradley Makuvire further advanced up the Gamecock indoor 3K leaderboard following Saturday’s race. Amaral clocked a new personal best time of 7:58.77 to become just the second runner in Gamecock history to eclipse the eight-minute mark in the indoor 3K. Makuvire turned in the third fastest indoor 3,000m time after posting 8:10.96.
The Gamecocks will return to action next weekend when they host the South Carolina Invite at the Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex. The South Carolina Invite will begin on Friday, Feb. 2 and will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 3.
