Gamecocks to Host Two Youth Track & Field Meets
Carolina set to welcome youth athletes to new indoor facility
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of South Carolina is proud to host two indoor youth track & field meets at its new indoor track & field facility. The Gamecocks will host the South Carolina Challenge on Jan. 19 and the South Carolina Classic on Feb. 23.
Both meets are sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union and hosted by Speed Elite. South Carolina coach Karim Abdel Wahab serves as meet director. Divisions are available for ages 8-18, and the entry fee is $26 per athlete.
“I have always been a huge advocate for our youth, and providing opportunities for kids has always been a passion of mine,” said South Carolina head coach Curtis Frye. “Part of the legacy I want to leave at this University is giving kids from Florida to Washington, DC, a chance to run at a world-class facility.”
South Carolina’s new indoor facility features a banked six-lane 200m track with a Mondo surface. The facility also includes two horizontal jump runways, two pole vault runways, a throws cage for the shot put and a high jump apron.
“I am truly grateful for the commitment our University has made toward the renovation of this facility, and I’m proud to share it with the youth track community,” Frye added. “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built, and I can’t wait to host many different meets in the coming years.”
All teams and athletes must utilize the online entry process via AAUAthletics.org. For more information, contact Karim Abdel Wahab at (970)-213-9497 or at kaw17@mailbox.sc.edu.
