Baseball Bests Queens in Wednesday Night Midweek

COLUMBIA  – The University of South Carolina baseball team scored four runs in the first inning and added five in the fourth in a 13-3 win in eight innings Wednesday night (Feb. 21) at Founders Park.

The Gamecocks had 12 hits on the night, three coming from freshman Ryan Bakes’ bat. He drove in three, including a two-run double in the fourth. Talmadge Lecroy and Ethan Petry had two hits apiece. Petry homered along with Cole Messina, who belted a three-run blast in the first inning. Petry also scored three runs in the win.

Matthew Becker earned the win on the mound, striking out five and allowing two hits with a walk in a two-inning start. Tyler Pitzer struck out the side in his inning of work, while Connor McCreery, Sam Simpson, Chris Veach and Drake Quinn had two strikeouts apiece. Carolina struck out 17 batters in the win.

Carolina ended the game with a three-spot in the bottom of the eighth, as Will Tippett ended the night for the second straight day with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Carolina has won its last three games in a run-rule fashion.
  • Dylan Brewer has a three-game hit streak after his bunt single. Seven Gamecocks have reached base in all five games this season.
  • Becker picked up his eighth career win as a Gamecock.
