Baseball Hosts Gardner-Webb on Tuesday Afternoon

FOR STARTERS

  • South Carolina continues its 10-game homestand with a Tuesday afternoon game against Gardner-Webb.
  • The Gamecocks will face the Runnin’ Bulldogs at 4 p.m. at Founders Park.
  • Tuesday’s game will be broadcast on SEC Network Plus with Dave Weinstein and Brent Williams on the call.
  • Tuesday’s game also will be on the Gamecock Sports Network presented by Learfield with Cade Crenshaw and Stuart Lake on the call.

BUSINESS LOTS DURING AFTERNOON GAMES Business lot parking passes will be honored in Lot 1 ONLY for the Feb. 27 and March 6 afternoon baseball games based on availability. The businesses at 405 (Lot 9) and 401 (Lot 10) Huger Street request that you begin parking at 5:30 p.m. on weekdays. Other business lots open at 5 p.m. on weekdays. Parking is allowed in Lot 8 (the Cregger lot) on the Williams St. side for the afternoon early games.

GAME DAY PARKING INFORMATION (including public game day lots (PGDL: $10 per game). All gameday lots are cashless. Please have a debit card or credit card ready for payment upon entry into parking lots.

SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB

  • Gardner-Webb is off to a 2-5 start, winning 1-of-3 games this week at home.
  • The Runnin’ Bulldogs defeated Quinnipiac, 4-3, as Alec Burns went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
  • GWU lost to Saint Joseph’s (6-2) and Canisius (8-5) on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
  • Gardner-Webb was picked to finish second in the Big South preseason poll while Burns was on the Preseason All-Big South team.
  • Tommy Tavarez has a .407 batting average and seven RBI while Humberto Torres has a .350 average and two home runs.
  • Lefty Reid Bertram will make the start for GWU on Tuesday. He pitched four innings against N.C. A&T last Tuesday, striking out two and allowing two hits.
  • Jim Chester is in his fifth season at GWU and has coached 16 All-Big South honorees in his time at Boiling Springs.
  • Assistant coach Anthony Marks was a player on Coastal Carolina’s 2016 national championship squad.

SERIES VS. GARDNER-WEBB

  • Carolina and Gardner-Webb will meet for the seventh time on the diamond.
  • Carolina has a 4-2 series advantage on the Runnin’ Bulldogs, including a 12-0, 7-inning win on March 15, 2022. Carson Hornung had two hits and an RBI and Cade Austin struck out four in two innings of work.

BREW CREW

  • Dylan Brewer has had a hot start at the plate, going 14-for-25 (.560) with nine runs scored, a double, a triple, 10 RBI and five walks in the first eight games.
  • in the Belmont series, Brewer was 7-for-9 with four runs scored and four RBI, including going a perfect 3-for-3 in Friday’s 8-1 win over the Bruins.
  • Brewer currently is second in the SEC in batting average, second in hits and third in on-base percentage (.625).

LECROY OFF TO HOT START

  • Junior Talmadge LeCroy is hitting .391 with a .622 on-base percentage in Carolina’s first eight games of 2024.
  • LeCroy leads the SEC with 16 runs scored and 11 walks.
  • LeCroy belted his first home run of 2024 in the 12-2 win over Winthrop.
  • He also scored five runs in the win over the Eagles, becoming the first Gamecock since Michael Campbell at Furman on May 16, 2006.

GAMECOCKS LEAD COUNTRY IN WALKS

  • Carolina has drawn 76 walks in eight games this season, good for the national lead in that category.
  • Talmadge LeCroy leads the team with 11 walks. That’s good for the SEC lead and is eighth in the nation.
  • Parker Noland has nine free passes, with Ethan Petry and Will Tippett at eight apiece.
  • Carolina’s 76 is eight more than the next best, which is Southern Illinois at 68.

KENNEDY CONNECTS

  • Making his first start of 2024, Kennedy Jones led off the bottom of the first with a home run in the 12-1 win over Belmont on Feb. 25.
  • Jones drove in three runs in the win, including an RBI single which also was in the first frame.
  • Jones now has 26 home runs between Carolina and UNC Greensboro.
