Baseball Picks Up Midweek Win over The Citadel

COLUMBIA  – The University of South Carolina baseball team earned a 7-1 midweek win over The Citadel on Tuesday night (March 5) at Founders Park.

Carolina scored two runs in the first as Ethan Petry brought in Dylan Brewer with a single to left. Kennedy Jones had a one-out single to left that Talmadge LeCroy scored sliding under the tag at the plate. The Gamecocks went up 3-0 on a wild pitch that scored a run and scored three in the fourth, highlighted by Cole Messina’s RBI single, to go up 6-0. Messina added an RBI groundout in the fifth to make it 7-1 and end the scoring.

Eddie Copper struck out six in 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and a run. Parker Marlatt got two big strikeouts in the fifth, earning his first win as a Gamecock. The quartet of Copper, Marlatt, Connor McCreery and Drake Quinn did not walk a batter while striking out 13.

LeCroy was a home run away from the cycle as he singled in the second, doubled in the fourth and tripled in the fifth. He also scored three runs. Tyler Causey added a pair of hits while Messina had two RBI.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • LeCroy upped his average to .350 after his three hits.
  • Carolina has now scored on a walk or hit by pitch 18 times this season.
  • The Gamecock pitching staff lowered its ERA to 2.52.
  • Carolina picks up its third straight win over The Citadel.
