Baseball Falls to Georgia Southern

COLUMBIA  – Georgia Southern hit three home runs and held the University of South Carolina baseball team to four hits in an 8-0 win over the Gamecocks Wednesday night (April 3) at Founders Park.

Georgia Southern scored five runs in the second, including a grand slam from Sam Blancato. He then had a solo home run in the fourth to make it 6-0 Eagles. Georgia Southern added a pair of runs in the ninth.

Carolina’s pitching staff tied a season high with 17 strikeouts, four from Dylan Eskew. Eddie Copper took the loss, allowing three runs in an inning-plus. He left the game with an injury.

Kennedy Jones and Cole Messina doubled in the game. It was the first time the Gamecocks were shut out this season.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Petry has reached base in the last 39 games dating back to last season after a hit by pitch in the ninth inning.
  • Connor McCreery and Parker Marlatt each retired the Eagles in order with a pair of strikeouts in their inning of work.
  • This was the first meeting between the two schools since 2011.
