Baseball Defeats Winthrop in Seven to Close Midweek Slate

ROCK HILL  – The University of South Carolina baseball team closed out the midweek portion of its schedule with a 15-3, 7-inning win over Winthrop Tuesday night (May 7) at the Winthrop Ballpark.

Carolina put up a three-spot in the top of the first as Parker Noland drove in a run on a groundout and Kennedy Jones plated a pair on a single through the left side. After Winthrop answered with a run in the bottom of the first, Gavin Casas got that run back on his seventh home run of the season, a blast to the gap in right.

Casas scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, then in the fifth, Talmadge LeCroy brought in a run on a squeeze bunt and Austin Brinling scored a pair on a double to left center. Jones drove in his fifth run of the night with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Carolina then went with the long ball in the seventh as Brinling, Ethan Petry and Cole Messina all homered for the 15-3 win.

Brinling was 4-for-5 on the night with a home run and four RBI. Jones had a season high five RBI, joining Casas and Dalton Reeves with two hits.

The win on the mound went to Tyler Dean, who pitched 1.1 innings of hitless relief. Tyler Pitzer struck out four in two innings in a start while Michael Polk struck out the side in the seventh.
