Gamecocks Ready for Final Battle in Eugene
EUGENE, Ore. (June 4, 2024) – South Carolina Track & Field has been battle tested all season leading up to the final chapter of the 2024 campaign, the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Tracktown USA. The Gamecocks will open the NCAA Championship tomorrow at historic Hayward Field to begin the four-day meet.

Meet Information
The wait is over, and business has begun as the four-day national championship meet will officially get underway tomorrow with the men’s decathlon starting at 3:30 p.m. (EST). Much like the regional meet, the men will compete on Wednesday and Friday, while the women will be in action on Thursday and Saturday. Wednesday and Thursday will consist of mostly semifinal rounds, while all field events will be final competitions. Twelve individuals will move on to the final rounds of track events on Friday and Saturday. The Top 8 finishers will score points for their teams and earn the title of First Team All-Americans, while finishers 9-16 will earn Second Team All-American and 17-24 will be Honorable Mentions.

Strong Mix
The Gamecocks have sent a total of 13 athletes to compete in 13 events to the NCAA Championship under first-year Head Coach Tim Hall. The 2023 campaign saw four athletes competing in four events. The men will compete in six total events, while the women will compete in seven.
On the men’s side, four of the five athletes that punched tickets have experience at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. Anass Essayi finished 4th in the 1500m in 2023 and will look to improve on that this week in Eugene. Channing Ferguson made his championship debut in the high jump last season, finishing 14th in Austin, Texas and will be competing in both the high jump and the long jump; making his NCAA Championship debut in the long jump. Both CJ Licata and Dylan Targgart threw the shot put in the 2022 NCAA Championship in Eugene, with Licata finished 13th while throwing for Princeton. Nyck Harbor is the lone rookie for the men and will be competing in both the 100m and the 200m sprints.
The Gamecock women sent eight athletes (one alternate) to the NCAA Championship this season, with six athletes making their NCAA Outdoor Championship debuts. Jayla Jamison is the lone returner to the championship games, having run the 4x100m in the 2022 championship and then finishing 19th in the 200m last season in Austin, Texas. Sylvia Chelangat will make her Oregon debut as the sophomore runner will compete in both the 800m and the 4x400m relay. There will be five true freshmen making their NCAA Championship debuts: Zaya Akins (400m, 4×100, 4×400), Teresa Cherotich (3K Steeplechase), JaMeesia Ford (200m, 4×100, 4×400), Cynteria James (200m, 4×100) and Judy Kosgei (1500m). Jahnile Registre has also earned her way to Eugene as the 400m specialist will aid the Gamecocks in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
