Hamner Becomes Back-to-Back Academic All-American

Columbia, S.C. – ­South Carolina women’s tennis junior Sarah Hammer earned her second consecutive recognition on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Team on Tuesday. The Fort Collins, Colo., native is just the program’s second ever Academic All-American and first player to ever receive the honor more than once. She is preceded in the recognition by Helen Crook who was named to the First Team in 1994.

The Academic All-America Teams aim to recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined work athletically and academically throughout the season.

In 2023, Hamner was named to the Third Team and this season the accounting major made her first appearance on the First Team thanks to her 3.91 GPA.

Hamner, a three-year letter winner for the Gamecocks, completed her season with a team-leading 32-9 singles record and an 18-15 record in doubles. She set the program record this season for most single-season SEC singles wins thanks to her near-perfect 10-1 mark in conference matches.

Hamner is no stranger to academic recognition, having twice been named an ITA Scholar-Athlete (2022, 2023) and twice being named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll (2022, 2023). She now adds two-time CSC Academic All-District (2023, 2024) and two-time CSC Academic All-American (2023, 2024) to her resume.

Hamner is one of just two SEC student-athletes to find themselves on the on the Academic All-America Teams this season and is the only one to represent the conference on the First Team. She is joined by Georgia’s Dasha Vidmanova on the Second Team.
