Carolina Completes Big International Weekend
DES MOINES, Iowa — Highlighted by Eric Favors’ Irish championship in the Shot Put, a weekend filled with 10 current and former Gamecocks on the international stage came to an end on Sunday. Favors, Yann Randrianasolo and Isaiah Moore were the final Gamecocks to take the track during the historic weekend.
For Favors, his mark of 18.64m (61-2) broke an Irish Championship meet record, previously set by John Dermody in 1999. Favors came in as the clear favorite in Ireland, and stood up to the expectation by tossing 18.42m, that would of been good enough to claim the Irish crown, on his first attempt before improving his mark to 18.64 on his third toss.
In France, Randrianasolo settled for second place in the long jump with a mark of 7.98 (26-2 1/4) falling just short of the World Championship standard of 8.17m.
Isaiah Moore was the final Gamecock to compete on Sunday, wrapping up the weekend for the Gamecocks in the 110mH. Moore, coming off an impressive third-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championship, settled for a semifinal appearance.
Overall, the Gamecocks have officially qualified two for the 2019 IAAF World Championships, with Aliyah Abrams (Guyana) and Wadeline Jonathas (USA) both in the 400m. The teammates are no strangers to the big stage as they were both members of the NCAA Indoor Champion 4x400m relay team. Jonathas is also coming off an NCAA Championship in the 400m at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships last month.
UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS
The next competition on the schedule for the Gamecocks will be Josh Awotunde at the 2019 Pan American games that will be held Aug. 6-10 in Lima, Peru. The Franklinville, N.J., native set Carolina’s indoor and outdoor shot put records as a senior in 2018, maxing out at 21.33 (69-11 ¾) in a season that included an SEC title and two first-team All-America finishes.
