Gamecocks Close Debbie Southern with Three Wins
GREENVILLE, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis wrapped its first tournament of the season with three more singles wins at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic. Junior transfer Kaitlyn Carnicella and freshman Jana Stojanova claimed the consolation title in their brackets with their wins on Sunday.
Carnicella continued her momentum in Flight 1, which began Friday with a narrow loss to a top-50 opponent. The junior backed up Saturday’s hard-fought win with another on Sunday, topping Zoe Hammond of Kentucky 6-2, 6-4.
In Flight 5 action, Stojanova also finished atop the consolation side of the bracket with her 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Georgia’s Hayden Mulberry.
Senior Olympe Lancelot, who was Friday’s lone singles winner, shook off Saturday’s setback with a tight 6-4, 7-5 win over Alessia Tagliente of Mississippi State.
All three finished the tournament with 2-1 singles records, while Saturday saw senior transfer Laura Friedman and freshman Anna Kantor complete their sweep through Flight 4 Doubles to the title.
Select Gamecocks will be back in action in the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C., next weekend, beginning with prequalifying rounds on Sat., Sept. 21.
