South Carolina Returns to Competition at the Gamecock Opener

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 9, 2025) – Now that the calendar has flipped to 2025, South Carolina Track & Field is set to host its first meet of the new year with the Gamecock Opener on Saturday at the Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex.

Know Before You Go
Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex does have a CLEAR BAG POLICY that will be in effect. Learn everything you need to know about the Clear Bag Policy by clicking here. There is also a WATER BOTTLE POLICY for all patrons and that is: one clear, plastic disposable water bottle is permitted. No hard, non-clear refillable bottles are allowed inside the facility.

Parking
For the 2025 Gamecock Opener, spectators will be able to utilize the Athletics Village Parking Garage for $10 per car, with no re-entry. There will also be city metered parking surrounding the complex that will also be made available through the ParkMobile app. For a full parking map for this weekend’s meet, please click here.

Ticket Information
There is a $10 fee for any adults wishing to attend the meet. Children that are 17 and under gain entry for $5, while kids 2 and under are free. Students/faculty/staff get in free with their valid Carolina Card identification. Please note that payments need to be made in cash.

Meet Information
The Gamecock Opener was originally slated to begin at 10 a.m. but has been pushed back one hour due to inclement weather arriving Friday afternoon in the Midlands. The first event on Saturday will now begin at 11 a.m. with the men and women’s high jump. The first track event will be the men’s 3k beginning at 12 p.m. There is a full slate of events scheduled, with the final event being the 4x400m relay for the men at 6:50 p.m. and the women at 7:10 p.m. Doors are set to open at 10 a.m. A total of 13 teams are set to compete in this weekend’s home opener.

Opening in Style
The Gamecocks opened the 2025 campaign on Dec. 6, 2024 at the Clemson Opener and did so with nine total wins and 28 new personal bests. The women’s squad secured seven of the team’s nine wins with three event wins being secured on the track and four in field events. Sylvia Chelangat won the 600m (1:30.91), while Cynteria James captured the 60m (7.32) and Jayla Jamison secured the 300m crown (37.22). Omaria Gordon competed in her first collegiate meet and captured the women’s long jump (6.01m), while Cheyla Scott made her Gamecock debut with a win in the high jump at 1.77m. The final two winners for the women’s squad were South Carolina State transfer Cameran Gist in the triple jump (12.56m) and Lena Richardson with a new personal best in the pole vault of 3.93m.

Conor Reilly was the individual winner for the Gamecock men, doing so in pole vault after clearing 4.97m. The final win of the day for South Carolina came from the men’s 4×400 meter relay squad of Josiah Wrice, Devan Crumpton, Anthony Greenhow and Jasauna Dennis after running 3:08.90. The quartet’s time currently ranks first in the NCAA heading into this weekend.
