Carolina Closes Strong at Tiger Paw Invitational

Women's 4x4 relay runs fastest time since 2007

CLEMSON, S.C. — The final day of the Tiger Paw Invitational brought more fast times for the University of South Carolina as the Gamecocks wrapped up the meet on Saturday. The Gamecock women’s 4x400m relay team ran the program’s fastest time in 12 years, and a handful of Carolina NCAA hopefuls bettered their season-best marks at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Facility.

The highlight of the day came from the women’s 4x400m relay crew, who went toe-to-toe with Texas A&M in the fastest mile relay in the nation this season. Ultimately, the Gamecocks came in second, with Stephanie Davis, Aliyah Abrams, Tatyana Mills and Wadeline Jonathas running 3:30.67 to Texas A&M’s 3:29.96. For Carolina, that’s the second-best time in the nation this season and the eighth-best mark in Carolina history. It’s also the first sub-3:31 4x400m relay for the Carolina women since 2007.

Otis Jones ran early in the day and cut time off his 800m mark for the third-straight week. The redshirt senior finished second with a mark of 1:49.47, the 23rd-best effort in the NCAA this season.

Jordan Fields continued her quest to qualify for a second-straight NCAA Indoor Championships in the high jump. Fields finished fifth Saturday by clearing 1.74m (5-8 ½), a season best.

Ordinarily a 400m national contender, Davis dropped down to the 200m Saturday with awesome results. She won the open section of the event with a time of 23.57, the 24th-best mark in the nation this season. Amecia Pennamon also ran a PR and finished second at 23.82.

Armand Woodley posted a second-consecutive career day in the pole vault. After clearing 5.30m, a new indoor PR, last week at the Carolina Challenge, Woodley went over 5.31m (17-5) on Saturday. He finished second at the meet and is now 27th on the NCAA list.

Including the 200m win from Davis, the Gamecocks notched two victories at Clemson. Yann Randrianasolo won the men’s long jump on Friday, while Quincy Hall set a new school record in the men’s 400m, 45.72.

FROM THE COACH

“The women’s mile relay had a good run. They had a shot to win it at the end and ran really hard. We got off to a good start, and Aliyah ran a 51-second leadoff leg, which was great. Tatyana also ran her best split of the year. Really all of those kids, Stephanie and Wadeline included, had great weekends. They’re excited for what they can do in the postseason.”

“Otis ran great. He beat a ton of guys who have scored in their conference meets. Finishing second in this meet is no joke. At the SEC Championships, I expect him to break a little faster and lower his time.”

“Armand set a new PR and almost cleared the next bar, at 17-11. Coach [Kevin] Brown feels like he’s very close to achieving that mark. I’m looking forward to seeing him try to clear 18 feet for the first time next week at home.”- Head Coach Curtis Frye

UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS
