No. 15 Gamecocks Set for Matchup with Clemson

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team looks to take the lead in the Palmetto Series as they face off against Clemson on Thursday at 4 p.m., at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.

Carolina (2-1, 0-0 SEC) and the Tigers (4-2, 0-0 ACC) are tied at 27-27 in the all-time series. The Gamecocks have claimed four-straight matches against their in-state rival, including a 4-0 blanking in the 2018 season.

South Carolina is hot off two back-to-back wins at ITA Kick-Off Weekend, including a, 4-1, victory over California and, 4-0, topping of Wake Forest, qualifying for ITA National Team Indoors.

Fresh off of SEC Player of the Week honors after going 4-0 at ITA Kick-Off Weekend and clinching both of South Carolina’s matches, No. 69 Mia Horvit brings a 9-3 record into Thursday’s matchup.

Horvit is also ranked in doubles with partner Ingrid Gamarra Martins at No. 11. The tandem is 12-2 overall and 4-2 against ranked opponents.

The duo will face a familiar foe in Clemson’s No. 3-ranked Fernanda Navarro and Marie Leduc. Gamarra Martins and Horvit competed against the Tigers’ pair twice in the fall season. First, the doubles teams clashed at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship, resulting in a, 8-2, loss for the Gamecocks.

Competing for the last time in the fall, the two teams faced off again, this time in the semifinals of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championship. Gamarra Martins and Horvit battled against Clemson’s duo, but ultimately fell, 7-6 (8), 6-4.

The Tigers come into the match after netting two-consecutive losses, both 4-0 against LSU and No. 15 Florida State at ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
