Baseball Earns 13-3 Win over USC Upstate

COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team used early home runs and a six-run sixth in a 13-3, 7-inning victory over USC Upstate Tuesday night (April 8) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.

A grand slam from Dalton Mashore, his first as a Gamecock, got Carolina on the board early in the first. An inning later, Ethan Petry added a two-run home run to give the Gamecocks the 6-0 lead in the second. USC Upstate hit a two-run homer of its own in the fourth.

In the sixth, three straight singles from KJ Scobey, Ryan Bakes and Henry Kaczmar loaded the bases for Nathan Hall, who drew the walk to send in Scobey. A double down the right field line from Jordan Carrion cleared the bases, making it 10-2. Scobey wrapped up the scoring in the frame with a single to score Beau Hollins and Carrion, giving Carolina a 12-2 lead.

USC Upstate notched one more run in the top of the seventh before Cayden Gaskin hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to clinch the run-rule win.

Jackson Soucie earned the win for Carolina, striking out three in his three innings of work. Parker Marlatt pitched a hitless inning of relief and got a big strikeout with the bases loaded in the fifth.

Petry, Carrion and Scobey had two hits apiece while Mashore drove in four runs.
