Gamecocks T-7th after R1 of Carpet Capital Collegiate

Will Miles T-8th after a 1-under opening round 71.

ROCKY FACE, Ga. — South Carolina men’s golf is T-7th at the Carpet Capital Collegiate after opening with a 6-over 294 Friday at The Farm. Senior Will Miles paced Carolina with a 1-under 71, and he sits T-8th heading into Saturday’s second round.

“Not a bad start for at all today,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “We lost a few shots in the middle of the round and got a few back at the end. I was very impressed with what I saw from the freshman. We are looking forward to the next two rounds.”

Miles made the turn at 3-under after a bogey free front nine, and he shot 38 (+2) coming in. Today’s round is Miles’ 28th career round of par or better. He’s in the running for his sixth career top-10 after 18 holes Friday.

Fellow senior Scott Stevens and freshman Harry Corbin are T-28th at 1-over. Stevens got off to a hot start and was 2-under through four holes. He had three bogeys on his final five holes of the front nine and made the turn with a 37 (+1). He played bogey free golf on the back nine, carding an even par 36. Corbin also made the turn at 1-over and shot even par on the back nine. The Inman, S.C., native, who made his Gamecock debut today, led the team with six birdies, which is T-3rd in the field.

Freshman Ryan Hall (T-58th) started the day 2-under through seven holes in his debut thanks to a pair of red numbers. He made the turn at 3-over however after a triple on 17 and a double on 18. He bogeyed four of his next five holes but rallied down the stretch with two birdies coming in to finish with a 5-over 77. Junior Caleb Proveaux (T-75th) carded an opening round 79 (+7). He made the turn at 6-over after a pair of double bogeys on the front nine, and he shot 37 (+1) coming in.

Freshman Teddy Tetak also made his debut alongside Corbin and Hall playing as an individual. The Limbach, Slovakia, native is T-36th after a 2-over 74.

Fellow SEC school Tennessee is in the lead after an 8-under round of 280. Georgia Tech, the host school, is in second after shooting 281 (-7). Davis Riley of Alabama has the individual lead by a stroke after an opening round 68 (-4). Seven teams in the field are ranked in the top-15 of the Preseason Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Coaches Poll.

Carolina will be paired with Virginia and Chattanooga for the second round on Saturday morning. Proveaux will lead things off for the Gamecocks at 8 a.m. ET on hole one. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat
