Gamecocks Set for ITA Regionals
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis is set to compete in the singles and doubles matches at the ITA Regional Championship tournament this week from Oct. 16-21 at the University of North Carolina.
No. 24 ranking, junior Kaitlyn Carnicella earned a spot in the singles main draw, which will begin on Fri., Oct. 17. She is joined by Daniela Piai and Jana Stojanova, who also picked up main draw entries. At the ITA All-American Championships, Carnciella advanced to the round of 32 after defeating Vanderbilt’s Bridget Stammel with an impressive 6-2,6-3 victory. Also at the ITA All-American Champs., Piani started her collegiate debut on a high note, winning her singles match in the round of 256 over her opponent from the University of Miami in a 6-4, 6-2 showing.
Two sophomores and two freshmen will represent USC in the qualifying singles rounds, which will begin on Thursday. Bella Bergqvist Larsson looks to continue a fast start to the fall season as she defeated sixth-seeded Greta Greco Lucchina of California Berkeley in the first round of the ITA All-American Championships.
On the doubles side, four Gamecock doubles pairs notched main draw spots, which will also begin on Friday. Larsson and Carnicella look to continue their 3-0 doubles after they swept two opponents at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic.
