Indoor Meet #4 ââ’¬” Darius Dixon Memorial invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The University of South Carolina track & field team stood tall on Saturday, tallying 10 event victories at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational. The Gamecocks led the field in victories at the Liberty University Indoor Track Complex.

Maiya Dendy (60m and 200m) recorded two wins on the day, while Eric Favors (shot put), Otis Jones (500m), Lissa Labiche (high jump), Yann Randrianasolo (long jump), Rougui Sow (long jump), Armand Woodley (pole vault), and KD Young (shot put) each won a single event. Carolina also won the title in the men’s 4x400m relay.

Carolina’s first win of the weekend came from Randrianasolo in the men’s long jump. The Toulouse, France, native was already in the lead when he put up his best mark of the day on his final attempt, a leap of 24-7 ¾.

The Gamecocks also left with the women’s long jump title. Sow jumped 19-6 ¾ to win for the second straight week, and Makyla Stanley finished third.

Carolina’s first win on the track came in the women’s 60m, where Dendy dominated. The junior easily made it to finals as the top seed, then ran 7.38 in the championship race to win by almost two-tenths of a second. That time was a PR for Dendy and the 35th-best time in the NCAA this season. Stanley continued her good day with a second-place finish.

Jones was victorious in the 500m for the second time this season as he captured the race Saturday with a personal best time. The Sumter, S.C., native crossed the line in 1:03.21 for the victory.

Carolina’s jumps dominance was on display in the women’s high jump arena. Two-time Olympian Labiche and Hanifah Abdulqadir each jumped 5-9 ¼ to top the field by four inches. Labiche was able to clear the height without a miss and in the process earned her first collegiate victory.

Young has continued to make an impression in her first collegiate season, and that continued Saturday with a win in the shot put. The Decatur, Ill., native won with a final throw of 51-3 ¾, and teammate Alycia Springs finished third.

Dendy was a two-time winner in the season-opening Navy Winter Invitational, and she achieved the double again Saturday with her win in the 200m. The junior clocked in at 24.16, just .08 off a PR.

Favors dominated the field to win his first shot put title of the 2018 season. One night after throwing a season-best in the weight throw, the sophomore tossed a mark of 55-8 ½ on Saturday.

Woodley was victorious in the pole vault. His mark of 16-6 ¾ is a new personal best indoors.

The last of Carolina’s ten wins came in the men’s 4x400m relay. Arinze Chance, Jones, Rivaldo Leacock and Jordan Griffin came home in 3:15.31 to take the race by more than three seconds.

NOTABLE

– Chance, who represented his home country of Guyana in the CARIFTA Games prior to signing with Carolina in the fall period, made his Gamecock debut Saturday. In addition to his 4×4 win, he placed third in the 400m, with a time of 49.07.
