Indoor Meet #5 — Tiger Paw Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. — The second day of the Tiger Paw Invitational was another opportunity for the University of South Carolina track & field team to shine, as the Gamecocks sent three student-athletes to the podium. Hanifah Abdulqadir, Otis Jones, and Armand Woodley each snagged a third-place result Saturday at the Clemson Indoor Track Complex.
The efforts from Abdulqadir (triple jump), Jones (800m) and Woodley (pole vault) came on the heels of Josh Awotunde‘s Friday night effort. The senior finished second in the shot put and set a new indoor school record of 66-10 ½.
Jones and Woodley each set personal bests on Saturday and joined Awotunde in adding an entry on to Carolina’s all-time indoor top-10 record list.
Jones rose to the occasion on Saturday, running his best ever indoor mark in the 800m. The junior stopped the clock in 1:48.96, good for third place at Clemson and the fourth-best indoor mark in Carolina history. It’s also the 15th-best run in the NCAA this season.
Three Gamecocks placed high in the women’s high jump. Jordan Fields placed fifth at 5-10 ¾, while Abdulqadir and Lissa Labiche shared sixth position at 5-8 ¾.
Woodley continues to set new personal bests on an almost-weekly basis, and Saturday was no different. The junior finished third in the pole vault, clearing 16-8 ¾. That was good for third place on Saturday, and it’s the 10th-best indoor mark in the Gamecock record book.
Abdulqadir entered the meet as one of the top-10 triple jumper performers in the NCAA this season, and she continued on that trajectory Saturday. The junior finished third overall and second among collegiate entrants with a leap of 42-11.
FROM THE COACH
“We have a good feeling about how we competed today. Armand was fantastic, and our women in the high jump did a great job. Hanifah was solid again in the triple jump, and our best performance came from Otis in the 800. He’s put himself in position to score for us at the SEC meet, and if he can keep improving he’s got a chance to earn a spot at NCAAs. Our men’s mile relay also had a great day. Everything is coming together for us right now. A few of our athletes have some things to fine-tune next week at Wake Forest and in our training sessions, and then it’s time for the indoor postseason to start at Texas A&M.”– Head Coach Curtis Frye
UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS
Carolina’s final meet of the indoor regular season begins next Friday, as the Gamecocks journey to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the UCS Invitational.
