No. 16 Women's Tennis Welcomes No. 1 Georgia for SEC Opener
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 16 South Carolina women’s tennis team hosts No. 1 Georgia on Sunday to open the SEC slate. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Carolina Tennis Center.
ITA RANKINGS
- In the latest ITA Team Top-25 Poll, South Carolina moved to No. 16 after going undefeated against Charlotte and SC State.
- Four Gamecocks found themselves in the first ITA rankings of the year.
- Kaitlyn Carnciella bumped up to 63rd in singles competition.
- The duo of Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald moved up to 18th, while Friedman and Sara Borkop are 73rd.
LAST TIME OUT
The Gamecocks swept Charlotte, 4-0, and SC State, 5-0, in a doubleheader matchup on Saturday, Feb. 14.
Carnicella and Dunyon won each of their doubles point, defeating the duo from Charlotte 6-3 and the pair from SC State 6-0. Sara Borkop and Jana Stojanova secured the doubles point for the Gamecocks in each match from court three, defeating the 49ers 7-6(4) and the Bulldogs 6-1.
Carnicella, Buchwald and Stojanova won their singles matches against Charlotte to complete the 4-0 sweep. No. 80 Carnicella earned the ranked win over No. No. 76 Ni Xi, 6-2, 7-5. Buchwald defeated 49er Shona Nakano 6-1, 6-2, and Stojanova clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory on court 6.
Buchwald won her second singles match of the day against SC State, dominating her opponent 6-0, 6-1. Dunyon defeated Bulldog Danica Nedeljkovic 6-1, 6-0 on court 5, and Stojanova finished her day with a 6-0, 6-1 win on court 6 to clinch the win. Carnicella finished her match on court 1, earning a 6-1, 6-2 win to go undefeated on the day.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Georgia enters the matchup 5-1, having won their last match 4-3 against then-ranked No. 10 Ohio State to win its second consecutive ITA Indoor Championship. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 17-55 against the Gamecocks. The two teams last met during the 2025 dual match season in Athens when the Bulldogs took the match 6-1 (Feb. 23).
Georgia has six players in the latest ITA singles rankings. Aysegul Mert (4), Deniz Dilek (23), Anastasiia Gureva (33), Sofia Rojas (42), Anastasiia Lopata (74), and Patricija Paukstyte (77) represent the Bulldogs in singles. The pair of Emma Dong and Dilek is No. 26 in doubles, and Gureva and Mert round it out at No. 47.
