COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team was 1-3 on the week, winning 7-0 on Friday night against No. 15 Clemson.

NOTES:
Josh Gunther, making his first career start on the mound, pitched a gem, going seven innings and allowing just three hits with no runs, one walk and a career-best 10 strikeouts in the 7-0 win over No. 15 Clemson on Friday night. Gunther, who threw 90 pitches on the day, ended five of his seven innings with a strikeout and retired the final six batters of his night. Clemson was hitting .332 as a team before Friday night, which was Carolina’s second shutout of the season and second in the last four games. Gunther is a perfect 2-0 on the year with a 4.20 ERA.

Ethan Lizama had a big RBI single in Carolina’s 7-0 win on Friday night. Lizama had three hits in the Clemson series, including a pair on Saturday. On the year, Lizama has three extra-base hits and three RBI.

Alex Valentin pitched the final two innings on Friday in the 7-0 win. Valentin struck out five batters and did not allow a hit in the shutout win. On the season, Valentin has 14 strikeouts compared to just three walks and he has still not allowed a run in 9.1 innings of work.

Carolina will play its next five games at Founders Park, starting with a double midweek against USC Upstate and Charleston Southern before a three-game series with Princeton that starts with a Saturday doubleheader.
