Baseball Uses Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting in 4-1 win over Charleston Southern

COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team used strong pitching, a home run from Aaron Jamison and a big two-run double by Ethan Lizama in a 4-1 win over Charleston Southern Wednesday night (March 4) at Founders Park.

The Gamecocks scored a run in each of the first two innings. Talmadge LeCroy’s sacrifice fly in the first and Jamison’s second home run of the season made it 2-0 Carolina. Charleston Southern threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with no one out, but a lineout, a flyout and a groundout ended the threat with no runs scored.

Charleston Southern did score a run in the sixth but Carolina answered as Lizama’s double scored LeCroy and Tyler Bak.

Brandon Stone picked up the win in relief, striking out three and allowing four hits and an unearned run in 2.2 innings of relief. Alex Valentin earned his third save of the season, striking out four and allowing just one hit with no walks in two innings. Connor Chicoli made the start for the Gamecocks, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing four hits with no runs and two strikeouts.

Jamison led Carolina with two hits on the night, while Lizama drove in the two runs.
