Women’s Tennis at the FGCU Spring Invite
FORT MYERS, Fla. — No. 15 South Carolina women’s tennis wrapped up play at the FGCU Spring Invite on Monday, winning five of eight singles matches.
In three days of play against FGCU, Kansas, No. 23 Ole Miss, Denver and Rice, the Gamecocks won eight of nine total doubles matches and 16 of 22 total singles matches. The Gamecocks swept Denver and Kansas in doubles on Saturday, and won two of three doubles matches against Rice on Sunday.
In singles, South Carolina won five of seven matches against No. 23 Ole Miss on Saturday, six of seven against FGCU on Sunday and five of eight against Kansas on Monday.
SINGLES VS. KANSAS
Freshmen Megan Davies and Nikolina Jovic won all three of their singles matches at the FGCU Spring Invite. The No. 105-ranked singles player Davies defeated Maria Toran Ribes, 6-3, 6-4, on Monday, earning her team-high 15th win this season. Jovic earned her 10th win of the 2017-18 campaign, cruising past Carla Pons Martorell in a 6-2, 6-1 win. No. 43-ranked Hadley Berg was also perfect in two singles matches over the weekend, including a comeback win against No. 90-ranked singles player Janet Koch, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, on Monday.
After falling in singles Saturday, Rachel Rohrabacher bounced back with two consecutive singles wins on Sunday and Monday. The junior defeated Amber Policare in two sets, 6-3, 6-4, on Monday, and improved to 8-2 on the season.
Kennedy Wicker followed up Sunday’s win with another standout performance on Monday, winning an eight-game pro set, 8-1. With the win, Wicker improved to 5-3 in 2017-18.
Mia Horvit‘s four-match win streak snapped on Monday against No. 94-ranked singles player Despoina Vogasari, who won, 6-3, 6-4. Horvit is now 6-4 in singles play in 2017-18.
Paige Cline battled in a long back-and-forth match against Tatiana Nikolaeva, who went on to win 6-4, 7-6 (4), while Nina Khmelnitckaia defeated Ingrid Gamarra Martins, 6-3, 6-4.

The Gamecocks will return to the Sunshine State for their first test in match play of the 2018 spring campaign, facing UCF at 5 p.m. ET on Jan. 19 at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus in Orlando and USF at 1 p.m. ET on Jan. 21 at the USF Tennis Complex in Tampa.
