Tucson, Arizona – University of South Carolina left-handed pitcher Matt Campbell is one of 20 players to be named to the 2003 USA National Team that will represent the USA at the 2003 Pan American Games. Campbell joins head coach Ray Tanner, who is serving as head coach for this year’s squad and is in his fifth stint with USA Baseball.
“It is a tremendous honor to be named to the USA National Team,” said Campbell. “It’s a great group to be around and I’m looking forward to this summer and the opportunity to pitch for USA Baseball.”
Campbell ended the 2003 season for Carolina with a 6-4 record with a 3.48 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 82 2/3 innings pitched. Campbell picked up a win at the College World Series vs. LSU allowing just two hits and one unearned run in 5 1/3 innings of relief as Carolina won 11-10. Campbell was twice named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball and earned SEC Pitcher of the Week honors three times.
For the second consecutive season a South Carolina player has been a member of the USA National Team. Catcher Landon Powell was a member of the 2002 USA National Team.
The 2003 USA National Team opens competition vs. the Arizona JUCO All-Starts on Saturday, June 28 at 6 p.m. at Hi Corbett Field before beginning a five-game series vs. Japan. The series with Japan begins on July 2 at 7 p.m. in Durham, N.C. The USA National Team will play two of the five games vs. Japan at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on July 4 (5:05 p.m.) and July 5 (12:30 p.m.).
