COLUMBIA, S.C. – Gamecock junior golfer Ainhoa Olarra secured a spot in the championship match at the 114th Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship after earning a victory over Norway’s Stina Resen in Saturday morning’s semifinal round at Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club in South Wales.
Olarra, the No. 39 seed in the 64-player match-play bracket, picked up her fifth head-to-head win of the tournament after topping Resen 4&3. The San Sebastian, Spain, native will now face world No. 1 amateur Leona Maguire in the finals, set to get underway later today.
After halving the first two holes, Olarra took a 1-up lead over Resen following a birdie on the par-4 third. Another birdie on No. 6 pushed her advantage to 2-up, and she headed to the turn with a 3-up lead after her third birdie of the morning on the par-5 ninth.
A pair of bogeys from Resen on Nos. 12 and 13 helped extend the Carolina standout’s lead to 4-up, and Olarra secured the victory with a birdie on the par-3 15th.
Maguire, a native of Ireland, posted a 3&2 win over Finland’s Anna Backman to punch her ticket to the finals.
The winner of the Ladies’ British Open Amateur will earn a spot in next month’s U.S. Women’s Open and August’s Ricoh Women’s British Open. Olarra advanced to match play after earning a top-64 finish (39th, +7) at the conclusion of 36 holes of stroke play on Wednesday.
