Horvit Earns ITA All-America Status

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The ITA announced South Carolina’s Mia Horvit as part of the 2017 Women’s Tennis All-America Team today. The Gamecocks’ freshman finished the season ranked 46th in the nation after a 27-12 season that featured eight wins over nationally ranked opponents, including two to reach the NCAA Singles Championship Round of 16. Horvit is the first All-American under the direction of head coach Kevin Epley.
Horvit posted a 14-10 record in dual play, including five wins in the number one spot. The freshman was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and the All-SEC Second Team, becoming the first Gamecock rookie to be named to the All-SEC Second Team since Ana Marija Zubori received the honor in 2007. She maintained an Oracle/ITA Ranking for the duration of the spring, reaching her highest career ranking of No. 46 to close out the season. In postseason play, she took down two ranked opponents to advance to the Round of 16 and become the first freshman and second Gamecock in program history to earn All-America laurels.
In the fall, Horvit went 11-1, winning the ITA Carolina Regional consolation singles title and later taking the overall singles title at the Jack Kramer Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif.
While 47 student-athletes were named to the Women’s Tennis All-America Team this season, 27 of those captured the honor in singles. To earn the honor the student-athlete must be a top 16 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship, reach the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship or finish in the top 20 of the final ITA National Singles Rankings. Horvit is one of 11 SEC members to receive the honor in singles with 20 others picking up doubles recognition.
