May 25, 2017
ATHENS, Ga. ââ’¬” South Carolina sophomore and 49th-ranked Ingrid Gamarra Martins fell to California’s Karla Popovic (10), 6-0, 6-3, Thursday in the Second Round of the NCAA Tennis Singles Championships. Popovic advances to the Round of 16, when she will face Sara Daavettila (18) of North Carolina Friday. Martins struggled to find her rhythm, quickly falling 6-0 in the first set. Popovic took another quick lead in the second, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Martins mounted a late rally bringing the score within two. But Popovic eventually claimed the victory with a 6-0, 6-3 score to advance to the Round of 16. Martins finishes the season with a 7-12 record in dual play and a 20-15 record on the year including seven wins over ranked opponents.
