Martins Advances to Second Round of NCAA Singles

ATHENS, Ga. — South Carolina women’s sophomore and 49th-ranked Ingrid Gamarra Martins took down Vladica Babic (63) of Oklahoma State. in straight sets to advance to the Second Round of the NCAA Tennis Singles Championships at the Dan McGill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. She joins fellow Gamecock Mia Horvit, who defeated Ioanna Markesini (118) of East Tennessee State University earlier today.

Martins will face Karla Popovic (10) of California in the Second Round on Thursday.

Martins jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the first set and never let off the gas, posting a dominating 6-1 score in the first set. But Babic found her rhythm in the second, taking a brief lead before Martins was able to shut it down for a 6-1, 6-4 final score to move on to the next round.

Martins improved to 7-11 in dual-play and 19-15 overall this year and notched her seventh win over a ranked opponent.

With Martins and Horvit both advancing it marks the first time since 1982, when Laura Bernstein and Ellen Oxreider both moved on, that two Gamecocks have advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Singles Championship.
