No. 12 Gamecocks Fall 4-1 to No. 5 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 12 South Carolina women’s tennis fell to No. 5 Vanderbilt, 4-1, at the Currey Tennis Center Friday evening. The Gamecocks fell to 16-7 overall and 7-5 in the SEC, while the Commodores improved to 16-5 on the season and 11-1 in the conference.
The Gamecocks dropped a tightly contested doubles point with split results. The doubles pairing of Paige Cline and Brigit Folland posted a 6-3 win on court two before the Commodores were able to claim victories on courts one and three to clinch the point. Astra Sharma and Emily Smith (5) took a 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot and Christina Rosca and Fernanda Contreras followed shortly with a 6-4 win of their own in the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, freshman Silvia Chinellato evened the score with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court five. The Commodores struck back with a straight-set victory of their own on court four, on the way to taking three-straight singles matches. Emma Kurtz took a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 4 spot, giving Berg her first loss of the season. No. 17 Sydney Campbell added to Vanderbilt’s lead with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ingrid Gamarra Martins (43) on court two to make the score 3-1.
Astra Sharma (4) clinched the match for Vanderbilt with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph on court No. 1 to make a 4-1 final score.
