HUMBLE, Texas — Head coach Bill McDonald’s squad will have a chance on the final day of the 2017 All-American Intercollegiate presented by Coca-Cola after shooting a 282 (-6) in the second round on Saturday. The team sits sixth in the team standings heading into Sunday’s final round. After sub-par first rounds, sophomore Scott Stevens and junior Keenan Huskey got back on track with two low scores to pace the Gamecocks in round two.

Stevens played a bogey free round and shot 67 (-5), tying for the team lead with five birdies on Saturday. The Chattanooga, Tenn. native, carded a 33 (-3) on the front nine and a 34 (-2) on the back. Stevens has now shot in the 60s in seven of his 14 rounds this season for Carolina, which leads the team. He’s tied for eighth on the leaderboard individually.

Huskey bounced back in round two with a 69 (-3). He matched Stevens with five birdies, shooting 34 (-2) on the front nine and 35 on the back (-1). The Greenville, S.C. native, has played nine of his 14 rounds this season under par and has shot in the 60s six times. Huskey is tied for 25th at even par.

Freshman Jamie Wilson remained steady, tallying his second straight round of even par golf with a 72. He had four birdies while posting a 37 (+1) on the front nine and a 35 (-1) on the back. The Mount Pleasant, S.C. native, is tied with Huskey for 25th.

Fellow freshman Caleb Proveaux shot a 74 (+2) in round two. He had one birdie and is tied for 37th. After shooting 5-over on the front nine, junior Ben Dietrich made two birdies and shot even par on the final nine holes. He’s tied for 86th at 11-over.

No. 13 Baylor leads the team race at 24-under after shooting 268 (-20) on Saturday. No. 1 Vanderbilt is in second at 12-under after a carding a 276 (-12) in the second round. The Gamecocks are within four strokes of third place (Houston, -6) heading into Sunday’s final round. Cooper Dossey of Baylor leads the individual standings at 10-under after carding a 68 in round one and a 66 in round two.

“It was a good second round for us and to see Scott (Stevens) and Keenan (Huskey) bounce back was nice. Our freshmen played well again too. Unfortunately we lost a few shots towards the end of the first round this morning; otherwise we would be in better position going into tomorrow. Our guys have shown some flashes of great play the past couple days. If the wind really blows tomorrow, I think we can makeup some ground on the leaderboard.”

Round Changer

Scott Stevens posted his 25th career round of par or better on Saturday with his 67. He finished the fall season in the top-10 in the country with a 69.58 scoring average. The sophomore will be gunning for his fourth top-10 finish of the season on Sunday.

Notable

Carolina had 17 birdies on Saturday after tallying just nine in the opening round.
Wilson leads the team with eight birdies in the first two rounds.

Up Next for the Gamecocks

Dietrich will lead things off for Carolina in the final round on Sunday at 9:48 a.m. Stevens will anchor the third round as he’s set to tee it up at 9:20 a.m. The Gamecocks will be playing with No. 21 Auburn and Rice in the final round.
