Horvit Caps Fall With Singles Title at Jack Kramer Invite

Nov. 6, 2016

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Gamecock women’s tennis freshman Mia Horvit capped off a sensational weekend at the Jack Kramer Collegiate Invitational by capturing the singles title on Sunday. She defeated UCLA’s Terri Fleming to take home the trophy.

“Mia got stronger and stronger throughout the tournament,” said head coach Kevin Epley. “By the time the final rolled around, she was really feeling her groundstrokes off both wings and playing at a very high level. I’m particularly happy that she was able to stay aggressive with her leads. This was a big win for her and the team. It’s a great way to end the season.”

Horvit got control of the match early, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set. She eventually captured the first set 6-3. The second stanza saw Horvit move out to a 4-1 lead again, but this time she finished even stronger, claiming the set by a score of 6-1 to pull out the win over Flemming. The Palm City, Fla. native finished her first fall with the Gamecocks boasting an 11-1 singles record. The lone loss came in her first match of the fall, giving her an 11 match unbeaten streak to close out 2016. Back in late October, she captured the consolation singles title at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships.

With the conclusion of this weekend’s Jack Kramer Collegiate Invitational, the Gamecocks have now finished their 2016 fall schedule.
