Carolina Closes Second Day of Main Draw at ITA All-American Championships
Oct. 7, 2016
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Gamecock women’s tennis team completed day two of main draw action at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships on Friday. After a solid run that began in the qualifying round, Ingrid Gamarra Martins fell in the singles round of 16.
“Ingrid gave everything she had this week and showed a lot of heart and toughness throughout,” said assistant coach Jeff Nevolo. “We’re very excited for her. She’s showing that hard work pays off.”
Martins won four-straight matches at the tournament before dropping today’s 7-6, 6-2 decision to Florida’s Belinda Woolcock, the ninth-ranked player in the country. Just by making the main draw, Martins became the first Gamecock to do so since 2000.
The doubles tandem of Hadley Berg and Paige Cline was also in action on Friday. The seventh-ranked duo in the nation took down the team of Woolcock and Kuhlman from Florida, 8-5, in the main draw consolation round of 16. Their next match will be at 12 p.m. ET against Babic and Adamovic of Oklahoma State.
“Doubles played great today after a tough outing yesterday,” said Nevolo. “It was great to see them come out and fight hard.”
