Martins Impresses at ITF 10k LTP Charleston
Oct. 2, 2016
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gamecock women’s tennis sophomore Ingrid Gamarra Martins had a strong start on the opening weekend of the 2016 fall season a few weeks ago, and that has carried over into this weekend’s ITF 10k LTP Charleston tournament. On Sunday, Martins played in the championship match of that tournament against Nicole Coopersmith. In the end, she fell to her counterpart, 6-3, 6-4, but head coach Kevin Epley is still enthusiastic about her play of late.
“I’m very proud of Ingrid and of all of her accomplishments at the ITF level, both this summer after a 25k doubles championship, and now in Charleston,” said Epley. “She has performed well against some really tough competition and it should bode well for her confidence heading into the ITA All-American Championships.”
Martins opened the tournament by cruising to wins in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals, she topped No. 1 seed Naomi Totka, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Then, in the semifinals, Martins downed Yukako Noi, 6-1, 7-5.
With the Gamecocks this fall, Martins has participated in one tournament, the South Carolina Fall Invitational. She went 2-1 in singles and 4-0 in doubles, helping her in being named the tournament’s top player. Next up, Martins and three other Gamecocks will be taking part in the Riviera ITA Women’s All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. That tournament is set to begin on Tuesday for Carolina, beginning with qualifying singles matches.
