Oct. 6, 2016
COLUMBIA, S.C. – While the Gamecocks currently have two representatives at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., three others will be at the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend. Yancy Dennis, Thomas Mayronne and Andrew Schafer will be the Carolina contingent competing in Atlanta.
The Gamecocks will be one of nine teams in attendance, including Georgia Tech, Georgia, Miami, Tennessee, Florida, Furman, Auburn and Vanderbilt. The three-day tournament is set to begin on Friday, Oct. 7 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 9. The format features three draws, with each player guaranteed at least four singles matches and three doubles matches. Play is slated to get underway at 9 a.m. each day.
Dennis, Mayronne and Schafer each come into the tournament having not played since the opening weekend of the fall (Sept. 23-25). Dennis competed at the Southern Intercollegiates, where he finished with a 2-1 mark in singles. Additionally, he and Sam Swank started 2-0 doubles before falling in the round of 16. During the same weekend, Mayronne and Schafer took part in the Ivy-Plus Tournament, where they captured the doubles title in the Pagoda draw. In singles, both earned a 2-0 start before falling in the Lenz draw semifinals. They each bounced back to pick up a win on the final day in consolation action.
