Gamecocks Go Unbeaten on Day One of South Carolina Collegiate Invite

Sept. 30, 2016

BELTON, S.C. – The Carolina men’s tennis team got off to a fast start at the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational on Friday. Like last year, the Gamecocks went unbeaten on day one of the tournament as all three players in action posted singles and doubles wins.

Sophomore Wood Benton, freshman Scotty Cameron and senior Sam Swank each posted straight-set singles wins to advance to the round of 16. In the A Draw, Benton, the No. 3 seed, took down Lander’s Omar El-Moslemany, and Swank, the No. 2 seed, defeated Ben Kelley of Presbyterian. In the B Draw, Cameron, the No. 1 seed, came out victorious over Lander’s Liam Roos.

In doubles, No. 1-seeded Benton and Swank eased past El-Moslemany and Springer of Lander in the round of 16 after receiving a bye in the round of 32. Meanwhile, Cameron teamed up with Furman’s Steryous, and the duo posted wins in both the round of 32 and 16 to advance to the quarterfinals.
