Gamecock Softball Adds Matt Stewart as Volunteer Assistant

Sept. 6, 2016

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Gamecock head softball coach Beverly Smith added more championships to her staff, bringing on Matt Stewart as the team’s volunteer assistant coach.

Stewart’s spent the last three years with Florida, working as a manager on the Gators’ back-to-back national championship teams. In that role, he assisted the players and coaches in workouts and at practice while also helping the staff with scouting reports. He was elevated to the team’s graduate assistant for the 2016 season, where his responsibilities grew to formulating practice plans and other responsibilities. He also served as Florida camp co-coordinator for the past two summers, which hosted over 140 participants each year.

“I am excited to add Matt to the Gamecock coaching staff,” said Smith. “Matt came highly recommended from Tim Walton at Florida and has lived up to his billing. I am drawn to his desire to learn and his passion for the game. I believe he is a great addition to our staff.”

During his time in Gainesville, he also served as an operations intern with the Gators in the fall of 2014. Stewart earned both a bachelors and masters at Florida, both in sport management.

Smith and her Gamecocks have played in four-straight NCAA Tournaments and have twice had NCAA Division I statistical champions in the last three years.
