ROSWELL, Ga. — University of South Carolina men’s golf student-athlete Ryan Stachler qualified for the 116th U.S. Open on Monday, advancing out of Sectional Qualifying and into the second major championship of the 2016 golf season. Stachler finished second at Ansley Golf Club’s Settindown Creek Course to secure one of three spots from the 39-player field. He will test his skills June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club in Plum, Pa.

Stachler was on fire Monday, shooting a 36-hole score of 136 (-8). His second round was especially strong, as he made it around the course in 65 (-7), with nine birdies.

A rising sophomore, Stachler played in four events for the Gamecocks in 2015-16. He helped South Carolina win the Camden Collegiate Invitational, finishing T-22nd, his best individual performance of the year.

This is the second consecutive season a current Gamecock has qualified for the U.S. Open. Matt NeSmith won his Sectional Qualifier 2015 and participated at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.

Stachler’s success continues a string of outstanding results for the South Carolina Men’s Golf program. The Gamecocks finished seventh last week at the 2016 NCAA Championship, a program-best, and advanced to the match play portion of the event for the first time. Carolina finished 10th in the final Golfstat national rankings of the season, and NeSmith was awarded the program’s first ever First Team All-America honors.
